👀 What we’re watching

🪙 Indiana Jones to the rescue

  • Two extraordinarily rare non-sports cards close at Heritage tonight, both from the 2008 Topps Indiana Jones Masterpieces set. Featuring autographs from Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg respectively, each card is numbered to just seven. Odds of pulling them from a pack? 0.014%. These are so rare to see at auction alone, let alone together, it will be a good measure of the market for movie card collectors. Both sit slightly above $5,000 at the time of writing.

🎨 Space Jam cels

  • Animation cels have been one of the collecting world’s best-kept secrets for years now. But, with record sales of cels from old Disney films and anime, the market seems to have woken up to the appeal of the unique pieces of art imbued with innate connection to popular films or shows. Goldin’s Space Jam animation cel is not a top tier piece — a signed reprint rather than the original art — but it displays quite well. Throw in a Jordan signature and association with an all-time classic, this will be one to watch — especially due to the lack of education around the category. It isn’t hard to imagine a bidder getting carried away believing they scored the real-deal. The bidding stands at $1,433 with a few hours left.

🤝 Tony & MLK

  • Julien’s begins their two-day sale of Tony Bennett’s estate this evening. Among the hundreds of lots, one remarkable piece stands out: A letter written to Bennett from Martin Luther King Jr. thanking him for his support after showing up to speak at a rally in Montgomery after the march from Selma. The current bid sits at $40,000 with a full day left.

🗞️ Treasure unearthed in Dallas

Heritage Auctions may have just taken in the nost valuable video game collection in history after tracing it back from an estate sale in Texas. Will Stern tells the story of the incredible find.

As is typical, the mainstream response to these seemingly outlandish price tags ranged from outcries of fraud, hurls of insults characterizing the buyers as foolish and/or nefarious, or, for many, a stinging regret that their past selves lacked the foresight to keep their childhood games sealed.

Many, myself included, resigned to always purchase two copies of everything moving forward: one for play, one for preservation, just in case history repeats itself.

Well, it turns out two brothers were well ahead of the rest of us on the final point.

📈 Game-worn on the rise

Ever wonder what takes a jersey from $200,000 to $2,000,000? Well, pretty often, it’s because of a process called photo-matching. Here’s our story on the rising game-worn industry and the affect of photo-matching.
